Elements include classroom population, instruction, classroom environment, and avoiding microaggressions. Participants will better understand their students’ sense of belonging in their classroom and develop plans to increase it.

Description: This course is designed to provide a foundational understanding of the systematic and structural barriers that keep underrepresented students out of computer science classrooms. Participants will examine data from various resources and learn about strategies that will help them create a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable learning environment for all students.
Audience: Grade 5-12 CS Teachers, Administrators, CS Specialists
Length: ~8 hours
Registrants will be added once a week to the course.

From coding simple apps on different Heritage groups to designing web pages the focus will be on sharing ideas on how to find and use resources on the different heritages. A list of heritage months and the history behind them will be just one takeaway. The incorporation of AI will also be mentioned in this chat.

This 4-hour online PD course explores ways to add elements to any curriculum to make it more inclusive. Participants will spend time evaluating their chosen curricula for elements of student voice, student choice, diversity, and equitable assessment. This course is not to discuss which CS curriculum may be more equitable or inclusive than the other. It is for educators to develop a number of ways to infuse more equity and inclusion into the lessons they are already teaching.

If you design PK-12 computer science professional development or curriculum at scale, we welcome you to join our community, led by volunteers from this community. We will focus on supporting teacher development of equitable and inclusive teaching practices. Goals include building community, sharing best practices, solving collective challenges, and exchanging ideas. This will enable us to collectively improve as a community and make more a substantial impact on the field.
In our quarterly virtual summits, we have generally have a focal presentation, with related breakouts, and then a round of Birds of a Feather discussions. You'll have plenty of time to connect with your peers at other providers to build community and share ideas.

Join PA Chapter member, CSTA Equity Fellow alumni and current CSTA Equity Council Member Sandra Hartman as she leads us in a conversation in race and social justice within computer science. We will look at the state of CS reports and how statistics can be addressed in the classroom. Attendees will discuss different ways you can talk about social justice reforms in your classroom no matter your level of involvement from a curriculum perspective. In addition, a small shared document will be used to record a list of places attendees can go for more information like the Kapor center and the Southern Poverty Law Center. This chat will also have a panel of activists out there getting it done.
