This 4-hour online PD course that explores critical elements of the classroom in order to create an environment that is welcoming for everyone. Elements include classroom population, instruction, classroom environment, and avoiding microaggressions. Participants will better understand their students’ sense of belonging in their classroom and develop plans to increase it. * Registrants will be added on a weekly basis
We designed this online professional development course to provide a flexible, deep learning experience that you can complete at your own pace. Course content includes meaningful and interactive activities focused on application to your CS classroom -- you’ll do a lot more than just read and watch. Plus, you will experience asynchronous collaboration with other CS educators as you both give and get feedback and exchange ideas.

Length

~4 hours (complete at any pace within the 13-week session; you can enroll anytime before Dec. 15)

Objectives

  1. Identify strength and/or improvement areas regarding classroom culture.

  2. Explain why student recruiting for the CS course matters.

  3. Explain why it is important for students to be able to engage in learning activities that allow them to explore/share things that are important to them.

  4. Reflect on and identify steps to develop a more inclusive classroom design and layout.

  5. Define microaggressions and investigate examples of what microaggressions are.

  6. Explore strategies to reduce microaggressions. 

  7. Identify actions that can be done to mitigate microaggressions within the CS classroom.

  8. Revise a previous lesson plan or project to include elements from the multi-sensory guide to reach all learners.

  9. Explore what educators have done to recruit students to the CS course to learn of new strategies.

    Develop purposeful strategies to proactively challenge unconscious bias and minimize stereotype threat in CS.

  • 3d. Commit to the mission of CS for all students
    Develop a personal teaching philosophy reflecting that all students can and should learn CS .

  • 4c. Design inclusive learning experiences 
    Use Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP), and other techniques to support all students in successfully accessing and engaging with content.

  • 5b. Cultivate a postive classroom climate
    Cultivate a positive classroom climate that values and amplifies varied perspectives, abilities, approaches, and solutions.

Fall Session

You will receive full access to the online course for a 13-week term from October 2 to December  31, 2023. You can complete the course by spending about an hour per week or completing in brief sprints. While we have suggested timing, you may complete it at your own pace.
 
Upon completion, you will receive a signed digital certificate indicating completion of 4 hours of professional learning.
 
When the term ends on December 31, 2023, you will no longer be able to make progress towards your course assignments and activities, but you will still be able to access course materials.
